How to choose a Plastic Fiber Optic Kit?

What are Plastic Fiber Optic Kits?

Plastic fiber optic kits are packages that contain all the elements necessary to install a fiber optic connection in a home or office. These kits include the plastic fiber optic cable, the connectors and adapters necessary to connect the cable to the devices, as well as the equipment necessary for installation, such as cable cutting and stripping tools.
Fiber optic kits Plastic fiber optic cables are an easy and economical solution to install a fiber optic connection in a specific location without having to make large investments in specialized equipment. With these kits, anyone with basic installation knowledge can do the installation themselves.

Should I have ruled out other options to bet directly on the POF?

Not necessarily, the fact of using POF as a dedicated medium for transmission is a guarantee that the effective and theoretical speed will be the same.

Unlike what happens with other repeaters, such as WiFi or PLC's, where the capacity shown is the theoretical maximum but it is never the real one that we will achieve and which is sometimes far from the commercially indicated value.

What are the differences between Snap Data Plastic Fiber Optic kits?

Actelser Snap Data Plastic Fiber Optic kits are designed to offer a high-speed and stable connectivity solution. The main differences are in the plastic fiber optic converters. There are converters that have 1 point and others that have 3 points, then there are 4, 6, etc. switches. Each of these kits has specific characteristics that make them suitable for different space needs and demands. For example, the Single kits offer an extension of the connection with just one extra point. Intermediate kits like the Duplex have 3 converters with 3 points each and the most advanced ones like the Premium have several converters, one siwtch. Then there are also cheaper versions with 100 Mbps converters.

What do I need to know to choose a Plastic Fiber Optic Kit?

Basically you have to determine:

  • The number of devices you will need to connect directly to the RJ45 (ethernet) outputs
  • The number of access points you want to have
  • The cable distance you will need.

Think about the points where you need connectivity in your home and approximately calculate the meters of fiber you will need.

Determine approximately the meters of cable that are hidden in the walls. To do this, you must know at least the points through which the tubes of your electrical installation pass and locate the boxes. That will help you calculate the meters. It should not be exact but a little approximate.

You must also know the number of devices that you will connect at each point and the number of outputs and speeds available to the equipment to be connected. For example, many smart TVs have a 100Mbps maximum speed card.

What questions should I ask myself when choosing a Kit?

You must know the network and Wi-Fi points that you need in your home, their locations, and above all, what is the type or connection scheme that best suits your type of home to achieve the highest performance (which comes defined by the speed/coverage tandem) taking into account the fixed and mobile devices you have. (see article on connection types).

That is, analyze well where we need quality network connections, the more that can be wired with Ethernet the better, and then distribute the local Wi-Fi coverage areas well to generate a wireless “cloud” that allows a very good connection anywhere. point of the house through local Wi-Fi transmitters.

What options do I have with POF?

The basic and main option is to wire POF with one of the available KITs to the fixed devices (TV's, desktop PCs, Video consoles, NAS, etc.) and wire Wi-Fi access points that provide connectivity to mobile devices in those areas (Smartphone, tablets, IoT gateways, etc).

Likewise, all kits are expandable and Actselser devices can be purchased individually, so a good approach is important but never definitive.

What are the differences between Snap Data kits?

The differences between Kit's Snap Data is the number of POF devices included and that allow different network configurations (star, ring, or mixed), different number of inputs/outputs that will allow us to choose the appropriate one for our network configuration .

At the speed level we have the 100Mb Single kit; The rest of the kits all work at Gigabit speed. Some kits incorporate a Wi-Fi transmitter to connect to the fiber receiving terminal that will give us local Wi-Fi coverage for the Wi-Fi equipment in that space. This Wi-Fi can be purchased separately for any kit, and as many as you wish can be installed to create enough local Wi-Fi networks and provide full coverage to our home.

Within the same kit, the POF meters supplied also vary. You must choose the necessary meters according to your installation calculations. This point is important, since the fiber strip cannot be spliced as such, it can be fed back with a Daisy chain equipment, but never splice two pieces of POF.

For what cases are each of the kits designed?

The Kits are designed to support basic point-to-point installations to Point-Multipoint installations, Daisy Chain or to be used as a backbone network to provide different Ethernet connections and WiFi Access points.

The Basic Kit and The Single Kit are Kits designed to go from one point to another point. Generally from the router to a room or device without coverage or network.

The Duplex Kit is for 2 points, and can be configured in cascade (link a room and from this then to a second room); or by outputting 2 independent POF lines from the router to two rooms without coverage (“Y” connection).

The Gold Kit and the Premium Kit are Kits for several extra points and their configuration is a star, although the Premium combines both: star and cascade. Obviously these two kits have many different possibilities.

The teleworking kits incorporate a WIFI point, but as we have indicated, this Wi-Fi can be used in any kit or device, since it is directly connected to an Ethernet port of the POF devices.

Can some kits be combined with others?

Yes, all Snap Data converters are compatible with each other and all installations carried out with any Kit are scalable with any other Kit or with any single element of Snap Data Actelser.

As it is an easily expandable system, you could provide a network to the space you most need with the Point-to-Point Kit and, later, expand the installation. Little by little you could get the backbone network you want in your home.

Can I expand a kit with loose parts?

Yes. You only need to be clear about the way of interconnection between the equipment that makes up the Kits and the extra elements that you wish to purchase.

If I have a low budget, what do I do?

As it is an easily scalable solution, you can plan an installation in stages, assigning connectivity priorities depending on needs. For example, you can start with point-to-point installation with our Single Kit at 100Mbps or 1Gbps.

If the equipment or equipment to be connected does not need a lot of intensity, the 100Mb kit will have enough. Later you can “move” the equipment as you need according to needs; The only thing “immovable” or difficult to move is the POF cable pull made.

If the budget is not a problem, what is recommended?

Make a POF backbone network throughout the home. This means providing wired connectivity with POF and Snap Data converters to all fixed elements and determining which points will need Wi-Fi access to allow us to have the best possible wireless coverage throughout our home. This option gives a better result than with Wifi Mesh.

Should I take advice? By whom?

It will depend on the skills of each one, it is not necessary to have knowledge of IP Networks or know how to use special tools for installation and configuration.

This is a simple topic, not configurable, in which we have to define connection points in our house and connection ports for our devices at each point. At the different end points we will add Wi-Fi modules to create local wireless networks and provide full coverage to our home.

Is it better to call an installer?

The greatest complication and where there is a risk is when accessing the existing electrical conduits to guide the POF cable.

The ducts may be small and/or crowded with existing wiring.

If we do not feel safe, it may be advisable to call an installer to perform this step. One solution may be telephone or antenna ducts.

If I have to pass cable outside to the elements, how do I do it?

The fiber can work outdoors as it can withstand temperatures from -55 to 70º C in a dry atmosphere, although it is advisable to protect it with a gutter or corrugated tube to avoid possible damage to it caused by impacts, animals, water from rain or the effects of the sun, for example.

To what extent are cable distances important?

Distances are important because if the distance is greater than the recommended one, it will be impossible to establish the optical link and the converters will not work.

The length of the fiber is limited to 50 meters since for longer distances the signal attenuation causes it to be below the minimum level necessary for communication between the POF sender and receiver. The greater the fiber distance, the greater the distance the light must travel, greater attenuation, less signal power at the destination, poorer quality of communication causing the equipment to NOT synchronize.

Is it really that easy to install?

It is easy to install, but you need to be a little crafty, especially when guiding the cables through the conduits. You can always watch our tutorials on YouTube to get an idea of how easy the installation is. Ideally, you should first check the channeling with a cable guide (and lubricant if necessary). In this way, it is ensured that it is in good condition and allows it to move from one point to another and, also, to know the necessary meters of fiber to carry out the desired installation.

How do I know if the cable is going to pass through the tube?

To pass the cable you will need a cable guide that will help you identify the path between the points to be connected. Being able to pass the guide between the two points guarantees that the POF cable will also do so and will also help you calculate the meters of POF cable you will need.

Do I need tools?

With the exception of the guide -and the lubricant if necessary-, the necessary tools are usually available in any home (screwdrivers, insulating tape, cutting pliers, etc.) in addition to the fiber cutting blade that we include in all our Kit's. We could summarize that we can install it without problems with the following tools:

  • A screwdriver to remove manhole covers and plugs.
  • Cable guide and lubricant.
  • Cutter that we supply in the kits.
  • Some scissors.
If they increase the internet speed, will I have to change devices?

It is possible that in the future operators will offer access bandwidths of 2.5Gb or 10Gb although our equipment will work both locally (between converters) or externally with a bandwidth of 1Gb, a speed that we believe is sufficient Today. The speed of the operator is independent of the installation.

As long as the operator's speed is 1 Gbps or lower, with this system you can transfer that bandwidth wherever you want. If the speed of the operator or the local network is greater than 1 Gbps, nothing needs to be changed, but you must bear in mind that between devices in this system it will only transport 1 Gbps, but it will not affect other devices that do not use this speed. network and that can work at speeds greater than Gigabit.

Do they hold 10Gbps? Is it really necessary?

No, they do not support 10 Gbps and we think that today it is not necessary to support it since most domestic devices operate at a maximum of 1 Gb and there are only devices with 10 Gb connectivity in large data processing centers.

As a detail, mention that the network cards of almost all Smart TVs on the market are still 100 Mb. For us it is more important to have less bandwidth but to have it where you need it without it being lost along the way.< /p>

What are the advantages of wiring the connection if everything is via Wi-Fi?

Wiring your connection has several important advantages compared to relying solely on Wi-Fi.
First, network cabling provides a more stable and reliable connection than Wi-Fi, especially in environments with many devices connected to the network. network or in areas with a lot of interference. Unlike Wi-Fi, which can be affected by interference from other electronic devices or by walls and other obstacles, network cabling provides a high-quality, uninterrupted connection.
In addition, network cabling provides higher speeds of data transfer compared to Wi-Fi. Network cables are designed to support a greater amount of data and transfer it faster than Wi-Fi, resulting in a faster and more efficient connection.
In short, network cabling provides a more stable connection, Fast and secure compared to Wi-Fi. Although Wi-Fi is convenient and useful for certain situations, relying exclusively on it can limit the quality and reliability of your Internet connection.

What is Wi-Fi 6?

Wifi 6 is the latest generation of wireless technology for high-speed internet networks. Also known as 802.11ax, it is an evolution of the previous Wifi 5 (802.11ac) and promises significant improvements in speed, capacity, efficiency and security in the wireless Internet connection.
Among the main features of Wifi 6 is the ability to support more devices connected at the same time, meaning greater network capacity for homes and businesses with multiple devices. It also offers faster data transmission speeds, allowing the transfer of large files in a matter of seconds. Additionally, it includes new security features to protect the privacy and integrity of your wireless connection. To take full advantage of Wi-Fi 6 technology, you need devices that support this technology, such as routers, mobile devices, and laptops. Although it is not yet a widely adopted technology, Wi-Fi 6 deployment is expected to increase as more devices and companies begin to use it.
